Make lecture fun with Notes Bingo! Transform the note-taking process from a mundane task into an interactive game that motivates students to stay focused and engaged throughout the lesson.

As educators, one of our primary goals is to keep students engaged and actively listening during lessons. As we all know this can be a formidable challenge, especially when the material is fact-heavy and requires deep attention to detail. Whether you’re teaching biology, history, or anatomy, some subjects are packed with a lot of factual information that can easily overwhelm students if they aren’t motivated or actively engaged.

That’s where Notes Bingo comes in—a creative, interactive method that combines learning and a bit of fun competition to keep students involved while helping them take thorough notes. This method can be particularly useful for subjects like biomolecules, famous inventions, types of clouds, human body systems, and any other topic that is fact heavy. 

What Is Notes Bingo?

Notes Bingo is a twist on the traditional Bingo game where the cards are filled with questions related to your lecture material. Students’ goal is to complete their Bingo cards by answering these questions as the lesson progresses. This format ensures they stay engaged throughout the class and pay close attention to the facts that matter.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Create Your Questions: You’ll come up with about 25 questions based on the content you plan to cover during the lecture. These will be the questions that are answered throughout your class. For example, in a biology class on biomolecules, questions could include things like, “What is the basic unit of a carbohydrate?” or “What type of bond connects two amino acids in a protein?”
  2. Generate Bingo Cards: Once you have your questions, use a digital Bingo card generator (there are free ones available online) to create Bingo cards. Each card will contain a randomized selection of your 25 questions. These cards will serve as the students’ notes for the lesson. 
  3. Color-Coding for Organization: To help students better organize and engage with the material before the lecture even starts, ask them to color-code their Bingo cards by topic. For instance, if you’re covering biomolecules, all questions about carbohydrates might be highlighted in yellow, lipids in green, proteins in blue, and nucleic acids in red. This not only helps them visually organize the information but also primes their brains to listen for answers related to each category.
  4. Winning Bingo: The goal is for students to write out the answers to the questions on the bingo card notes sheet as they get answered during the lecture. You can decide what ‘winning’ looks like. Traditional bingo wins when a row, column, or diagonal are all filled in. 

How does Notes Bingo Make Lecture Fun

Notes Bingo isn’t just a fun classroom game. It’s an effective learning strategy that encourages active listening and reinforces note-taking skills. 

1. Increased Engagement

Students are more likely to pay attention when there’s a game involved. By turning the process of taking notes into a game, you’re increasing their engagement with the material. Instead of passively listening, they’ll actively listen for the answers to the questions on their Bingo card. It also adds an element of excitement and competition, as they try to get “Bingo” and complete their cards.

2. Improved Retention

When students are actively engaged and listening for specific pieces of information, they’re more likely to remember the material. Repetition plays a big role in retention! Every time someone claims ‘Bingo’, I ask them to read the answers they have in their winning row. Everyone gets to hear the facts again and again!

3. Effective Note-Taking

One of the challenges with traditional note-taking is that students often don’t know what to write down or get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. Notes Bingo guides them through the lecture by helping them focus on the most important details—answering the questions on their cards. 

4. Increased Focus

Lectures can sometimes become monotonous, and students can lose focus, especially when the content is dense. Notes Bingo keeps them on their toes by requiring them to pay attention and take note of specific details. The game-like structure naturally boosts focus, which helps students absorb and retain more information.

How to Set Up Notes Bingo in Your Classroom

Here is the the step-by-step process of setting up Notes Bingo in your classroom.

Step 1: Create Your Bingo Questions

You’ll need to come up with questions that will be covered during your lecture. Depending on your topic and your students, they can be open ended questions or fill in the blank. 

Here are some examples!

  • For a biomolecules lesson:
    • What is the main function of carbohydrates in the body?
    • Which molecule is commonly referred to as table sugar?
    • What type of fatty acid contains at least one double bond?
    • What is the basic unit of proteins?
  • For a body systems lesson:
    • What is the primary function of the cardiovascular system?
    • What type of cells are responsible for immunity?
    • Which organ system is responsible for hormone regulation?
    • What part of the brain controls basic life functions like breathing?

Step 2: Generate Bingo Cards

Using an online Bingo card generator, input your questions and create randomized Bingo cards for your students. Print the cards out so that each student has a unique card during the lesson.

Twenty five questions will fill out a traditional 5×5 bingo card. However, most bingo generators allow you to select 4×4 and 3×3 cards as well if you have fewer questions.

You can also add FREE spaces if you need to. Say you are doing a 5×5 but you can only come up with 23 questions, add two FREE spaces. 

Or include review questions from a different topic that your students should already know! 

I like this bingo generator because it gives me the most options and flexibility. It will even allow images inside the squares! For this generator, add your question text directly into the boxes. Set the font style so text moves to the top of the box. Hit ‘enter’ a few times below the text to make some space for your students to write answers. 

Step 3: Color-Code the Questions

Before the lecture begins, instruct students to color-code their Bingo cards. This can be done by topic or category (e.g., all carbohydrate-related questions are colored yellow, all lipids are green, etc.). Color-coding helps students mentally prepare and become familiar with the types of answers they’ll be looking out for during the lecture. 

Step 4: Lecture and Play Bingo

As you go through the lecture, students will answer the questions on their cards as they are answered in lecture.  When a student gets Bingo (five answers in a row), they can raise their hand or shout “Bingo!”. To prove they have bingo, they must read out the answers to the questions in their winning row. This repetition will be a big help to remembering the material later!

Step 5: Reward the Students

Because every student has a different order of questions on their card, they will win at different times. It is important that each winner gets a prize! A tiny piece of candy, a sticker, a mark that accumulates up to a bigger prize..something that will motivate. 

Be sure students get a prize for completing the entire notes sheet as well! In my class, at the end of a Notes Bingo day, I walk around and check their work. If everything is filled in correctly, their prize is to spend the end of class with friends or on their devices. If not, they spend the time completing the notes.

The Next Day: Optional Activity

Lecture Bingo notes need one more thing – a bit of organization. If time allows during the next class period, students take scissors to their bingo cards and cut out each square. They then paste the squares onto another sheet of paper, organized by topic/the color code they used before lecture. 

This time is a great way for students to review their notes from the day before and think about them in a new way: how they fit together. Depending on the topic, you may even give them liberty to group the questions/note squares in any way they feel makes sense! Allow them to share with the class or a group the reason behind their own organization choices.
